A tantalising aroma rises from the dark red liquid. We dip the black ladle in, helping ourselves and each other. Deep colour splashes into white bowls. We dig in our spoons, and the meal begins.

18th June 2013 – soup
It sits in the saucepan, white and pulsing with the first simmering bubbles of heat. As its scent rises to my nostrils, I think of the fresh, buttered bread I will dip into it.
