17th November 2013 – Christmas trees
Green and spiky, trapped in pots wrapped with shiny, red paper. Their greenery is forced, like the smiles of the shoppers as they are reminded of the festive season to come.

8th October 2013 – walker
He pushes a bright red, plastic train on wheels. A blue dummy hangs from his mouth. He smiles at his mother as she bends down to remove it. Stiff-legged with the newness of walking, he toddles up the gentle slope.
20th June 2013 – cashier
She smiles as she puts my goods through the scanner, striking up a cheerful conversation. I immediately smile back, my day brightened by her sunny friendliness.

2nd February 2013 – singer
Bottle-blonde hair and bright red lipstick. Dancing along the street, her mouth moving in a song. Our eyes and smiles meet. She sings louder – happy on a sunny winter morning.
