Their rounded backs are turned against the wind, sitting in a row on a service station sign. A Halloween foursome, heralding the darkness of tomorrow.

It used to advertise a public house. A tall wooden pole, pushed securely into place well over a century ago. Its decorated metal panel, squeaking and swaying in the autumn wind and rain, now proclaims a doctor’s surgery.
