16th September 2013 – ferret
Yellow and brown, it looks soft as silk. Carefully harnessed by a lead, it scurries busily along the shopping street, following scents and looking for food. Its owner follows, burly belly just showing beneath a bulging t-shirt.
3rd July 2013 – baby bird
It flits fearlessly down at our feet, looking for food. Soft downy feathers with a speckled pattern just showing. Quick as a flash, it darts to the wall, grabbing and swallowing an insect almost before we notice its movement.
18th June 2013 – soup
It sits in the saucepan, white and pulsing with the first simmering bubbles of heat. As its scent rises to my nostrils, I think of the fresh, buttered bread I will dip into it.

20th May 2013 – robin
He hops unexpectedly into my path, his dulling, Christmas-red breast catching my eye. In his beak is a small insect, his next contribution to his growing brood. Winter is over and Summer is here.

15th May 2013 – dish
I place the brown, ceramic dish of food I have cooked in the centre of the table. It sits, steaming and glistening. It contains all my hopes of a delicious meal which we will enjoy with our friends.

27th April 2013 – worms
Without worms, no soil. Without soil, no plants. Without plants, no food. Slimy, small, seemingly insignificant; I watch them munching and burrowing, as I learn their true worth.

29th March 2013 – Easter
The family gather at our dining table. Its rickety, wooden everyday-ness is transformed. Love and laughter bloom, and food is shared. Spring is here, despite the cold outside.
