The perfect combination. Cherry-ripple flavour, heaped in cold mountains. Chocolate sponge, crumbly and moist. As the crumbs freeze to the snowy peaks, they begin to melt. An avalanche of sweetness finds its way to my spoon.

Friends happily wield paintbrushes in return for drinks and cake. They transform our half-done spaces into wonderlands of colour and changed light.
We make a cake, something we always do when we’re together. As we weigh, mix and bake, we talk of past, present and future. She is still the only person who can make me laugh so much it hurts.
Taken from the oven, it hisses gently. A miraculous mix of eggs, sugar and fat. The knife slides in and out cleanly. A cake for my mother, who first gave me the gift of baking.
