28th September 2013 – beetroots
Thick green leaves with red veins like arteries. A red stalk leading down to black, bulbous heads. Pulled from the earth and deposited here, they shed soil onto the cardboard beneath them. Inside dwells sweet red flesh, and juice which … Continue reading
27th September 2013 – autumn sunrise
The weakening light struggles to pierce the early morning clouds. A watercolour wash of pinks and oranges faintly tints them from underneath. The sun floats to the surface, serene and pale.

26th September 2013 – old man’s beard
Feathery tendrils gently cup the nut-brown seeds. The bearded remnants of summer fruits, filling the hedgerow with their snowy whiteness. Soon, they will fly off to find more fertile ground, ready to spring up renewed.

25th September 2013 – waiting
A small black and white face appears at the back window. Hopeful eyes scan the car park. Seeing only me, the dog slumps visibly, head sinking onto its front paws. Despondent, it must wait again.

24th September 2013 – gaffer tape
A man leans over, tearing and sticking. Laid in strips across the yellow inflatable’s surface, it covers the puncture, just about. Until a new one can be bought, this will have to do.

23rd September 2013 – rose
Red and velvet-like, the petals seem dipped in blood, their edges dark and dripping with dew. A last remnant of summer before the autumn sets in.
22nd September 2013 – cake and ice cream
The perfect combination. Cherry-ripple flavour, heaped in cold mountains. Chocolate sponge, crumbly and moist. As the crumbs freeze to the snowy peaks, they begin to melt. An avalanche of sweetness finds its way to my spoon.

21st September 2013 – accordion
Flashes of red appear as its bellows sigh in and out like lungs. Deft fingers traverse its keys. The music seems too polyphonic to come from its slight frame. Musician and instrument meld together, the one providing breath for the … Continue reading

20th September 2013 – children
They move in a pack, chasing after a girl who rides a pink scooter. She wears a green onesie, a belt round her middle. One child looks at me warily, then runs off to join the others on the playground. … Continue reading
