1st January 2013 – a duck

A beautiful, sunny start to New Year’s Day and a couple stand at the canal side, throwing bread for an assortment of ducks, swans and seagulls. The sunlight on the water reflects ripples of light onto the canal walls. One duck stands out. Darting in and out of all the common mallards and drakes, he is a deep black colour, larger than the ducks around him. Suddenly, as he darts in and out of a ripple of sunlight, a beautiful flash of iridescent green shoots over his head and back. It’s so fast, I think I imagined it, but then there it is again, like the dashing green of a kingfisher, seen by chance.
